What is a Reaction Time Test?

Reaction time is the gap between seeing a stimulus and physically responding โ€” essentially, how fast your brain processes what your eyes see and tells your hand to move. In competitive gaming (Valorant, CS2, Apex Legends), shaving 50ms can be the difference between winning a gunfight or getting eliminated. This test measures your pure visual reaction time in milliseconds across 5 rounds.

How the test works

You'll complete 5 rounds. Click the screen to start, then wait patiently โ€” when the background turns green, click as fast as you can. Your final score is the average of all 5 rounds. Clicking before the signal counts as a false start and that round doesn't count. The key is reacting, not anticipating.

What does my score mean?

  • Above 400ms: Beginner โ€” Consistent practice makes a real difference, don't give up.
  • 300โ€“400ms: Below Average โ€” You've got room to grow with regular training sessions.
  • 250โ€“300ms: Average โ€” Right in the middle of the normal human range.
  • 200โ€“250ms: Above Average โ€” Solid reflexes; you'll have an edge in most FPS lobbies.
  • 150โ€“200ms: Fast โ€” Pro-level reaction time. Most top streamers land in this range.
  • Under 150ms: Superhuman โ€” Top 1% globally. Have you considered going pro?

How to improve your reaction time

Practice consistently โ€” short, focused sessions beat marathon grinds. Reduce system latency: a 144Hz+ monitor and a low-latency mouse make a measurable difference. Sleep is non-negotiable (sleep deprivation can slow reaction time by up to 30%). Warm up before ranked matches rather than jumping straight in cold. Aim-training tools like Aim Lab can also help build the muscle memory your reflexes rely on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the average human reaction time?

For visual stimuli, the average falls between 200โ€“300ms. Experienced gamers typically score 170โ€“220ms, while professional eSports players often hit 150ms or below.

Does reaction time matter in Valorant or CS2?

Yes, but it's not everything. Game sense, crosshair placement, and positioning can compensate for a slower reaction time. That said, improving your reaction speed does give you a real mechanical edge in gunfights.

Why does my score vary between rounds?

Completely normal. Reaction time naturally fluctuates by 20โ€“40ms due to shifts in attention, breathing rhythm, and micro-fatigue. That's exactly why we average 5 rounds for a more accurate reading.

Can I actually train my reaction time, or is it just genetics?

Both factors play a role. While genetics set a baseline, consistent deliberate training can improve reaction time by 15โ€“20% over several weeks. Just playing games alone isn't enough โ€” targeted practice is key.
